“The fact is that opportunities are just that. They represent a potential outcome. I tried my very best this past year to turn the opportunity provided by this scholarship into the outcome that I wanted for myself. On the whole, I think I succeeded, but there were definitely times when I fell short. As scholarship recipients, it is up to us to acknowledge that there are people in this room who see potential in us, recognize our hard work, will be rooting for us to succeed, and have given us the chance to pursue our passions. It is up to us to turn this opportunity into the reality that we want for ourselves. Freshman year is hard. But it doesn’t have to be without joy. Find that joy somewhere on campus every day.“
